Business Dressing - Women

Women:
  • Skirted suit or pantsuit
  • Conservative length skirt
  • Clean, well cut hair
  • Appropriate daytime make-up
  • Shoes in good condition - no stilettos or sandals
  • Fingernails clean - conservative nail polish
  • No sleeveless or low-cut tops
Business Dressing – Men

Men:
  • Suit
  • Clean, crisp white shirt
  • Conservative tie
  • Hair trimmed
  • Buffed shoes
  • Fingernails short and clean

The standard job interviewing attire for women is a skirted suit or conservative pantsuit. A blazer with blouse and skirt suit or a professional looking dress is a possible second choice. Wear a color that looks good on you.

Remember that you are interviewing for a job and not out on a date. Watch the skirt length. Do not go sleeveless or wear anything low-cut. Rethink the stilettos or sandals. Be sure that your shoes are in good condition, not scuffed or run down at the heel.

Your hair should be clean and well cut. Be sure Make-up should be appropriate for daytime with lipstick and nail polish in conservative tones.

Carry a portfolio and avoid large purses.

Whether you are new to the working world, changing jobs, facing a dress code policy change or you just feel the need to alter your professional look, putting together a traditional business wardrobe can be a daunting task. However, selecting the right wardrobe options will prove to be wise investments.

Let’s begin with the most important (and expensive) element of your business wardrobe – the suit. Rather than start with a cutting edge look that may be obsolete next year, select 2-3 classically tailored suits in a year round fabric and conservative colors. A popular choice is a 120’s merino wool in a bengaline weave, which tends to resist wrinkling and provides natural stretch for increased comfort. Navy and charcoal gray, in a plain or pinstripe patterns, will always make for a polished look.

Current trends favor a three-button jacket with double reverse pleated pants, but both two and three button models will provide you with a garment that can be worn for many years. Be sure to select trousers that are lined to the knee, since the lining will add both increased comfort and longevity (trousers always seem to wear out before suit jackets).

Strong consideration should also be given to your selection of a tailor. It’s often wise to rely on the recommendations of friends and business associates. An adept tailor is invaluable. There’s nothing worse than putting on your newly altered suit for the first time, only to notice that the pants are too short or the jacket sleeves too long.

Once you have the basics, you can slowly add other suits to round out your wardrobe. A light tan or beige color works well in warmer weather. Winter weight wool fabrics will keep you warmer during the winter. The best rule of thumb is to wear what is comfortable for you, always remembering that classic tailoring and colors will best stand the test of time. – Source: Solis Company

Please follow these guidelines while on assignment for Burnett Staffing Specialists. Adherence to these guidelines will help you project a professional image and contribute to your success as a Burnett employee!

For WOMEN: A skirt with blouse or sweater, or a business dress are common professional attire for assignments. The addition of a coordinating jacket adds an instant touch of professionalism.
Hemlines are recommended to be no shorter than 2 inches above the knee. High splits in skirts are not considered proper in a work environment, as well as low cut, see-through or tight garments. When in doubt, conservative is always best!
Limit jewelry to a minimum. Make-up, including nail polish, is best if subtle and conservative.
For MEN: A shirt, tie and dress slacks are acceptable dress for men. The addition of a coordinated jacket provides a professional touch. Socks are a must. Limit the amount of jewelry worn on assignments.
    • Assume that the dress code for each assignment is professional.
    • Clothes should always be clean and pressed.
    • Shoes should be clean and polished.
    • Hair should be neatly groomed in conservative styles.
    • Hair and nail length should not interfere with your ability to perform assigned duties.
    • Jewelry common to "body piercing," such as nose or tongue rings, are not acceptable for Burnett assignments. Exceptions are given if such jewelry is part of a person's national heritage or religion.
    • Glasses should be kept clean to enhance your appearance and your vision.
    • Also, in consideration of other co-workers moderate use of perfume and cologne is best.

Personal Hygiene
While awkward to discuss, the subject of hygiene is important to your success as an employee. Poor hygiene will undo all efforts to project a professional image. Daily bathing and daily dental care will eliminate many results of poor hygiene such as body odor, bad breath, dandruff, and dirty nails. Poor hygiene gives others a bad impression of you and can negatively reflect on the quality of your work.
Professional dress guidelines vary from one office environment to another. These are written to provide you with general guidelines that will apply for most client environments. After your first day on assignment, you may follow a slightly less professional dress if it meets the environment of the company where you are assigned. Consult your Staffing Manager if you are unsure about appropriate dress for your assignment.

Casual Dress Guidelines
If you are on a Burnett assignment at a company where "casual" dress attire is allowed either every day or on special designated days, follow these guidelines:

For WOMEN: A pants suit, slacks or long casual skirt combined with a short or long sleeved blouse or sweater. A jacket or vest may be added for a professional suited look.
For MEN: Sport slacks or neat Dockers-type pants with a sport shirt...or...a golf shirt that has shape, not baggy and sloppy. A sport coat or vest - rather than a suit jacket may be worn with or without a tie.
INAPPROPRIATE ITEMS include: Stirrup pants or leggings; jeans; blue jean skirts and dresses; T-shirts; sleeveless dresses or blouses; halter or tank tops; shorts and skorts; culottes or split skirts above knee-length; sweat-suits; and "see through" items.
EXCEPTIONS: The only exceptions to these guidelines would be for Burnett or Choice employees working within environments where standard dress for all employees allows blue jeans, shorts or T-shirts to be worn. You will be notified if special safety apparel is required.

If you have any questions about what is appropriate to wear to an interview or on the job, your Burnett/Choice Consultant or Staffing Manager will be glad assist you.
