Approximately eight out of 10 Americans experience back injuries during their lives, most of them resulting from improper lifting.
For every back injury that occurs on the job, more than twice as many happen at home or in recreational activities.

Follow these tips to help prevent back injuries:

  • Lighten the Load – Don’t hurt your back!
The ideal weight limit for a single lift by one worker is between 20 and 25 pounds, with a maximum single lift of 50 pounds. Keeping to these limits isn’t always possible, however. How can you protect your back when the job requires frequent and/or heavy lifting?

  • Reduce the load size.
Try breaking load sizes down into smaller, more manageable loads.

  • Get assistance.
Get a co-worker to help you lift the load, or use hand trucks, forklifts, and other similar aids.

  • Start at the right height.
Bending over or reaching up while you lift can spell trouble. The ideal storage range is between knee and shoulder level. If this isn’t always possible, store light materials above and heavier loads below.
If lifting is a part of a Burnett/Choice employee’s duties, the weight limit is 25 pounds. Anything heavier requires another person or persons to assist. If you have any questions about this, ask your Staffing Manager.
