Sue
Burnett took on the stiff competition from numerous other
personnel firms and opened Burnett Personnel Services as a “fee
paid” service in 1974. Encouraged by a booming Houston oil and
gas industry based economy and operating on a $10,000 loan, Burnett
became profitable in the first year. In 1976, Rusty
Burnett joined the firm and started the professional
division of Burnett. In 1977, Burnett Temporaries was started.
Rusty Burnett
developed one of the first personnel industry computer software
designed to facilitate the employee/job match and expedite the dispatch
process. This copyrighted program catapulted Burnett ahead of its
competition. By 1981, Burnett had four offices.
In 1982, 1986,
and 1990, three tough recessions impacted Burnett’s business.
Credit for Burnett’s survival stems from the insightful decision
to shift the emphasis of Burnett’s professional oil and gas
permanent division, headed by Rusty Burnett, to temporary clerical
staffing.
During the 1986
recession, with half their business lost within six months, the
Burnett’s made more critical decisions. Unlike any other permanent
placement service, Burnett began selling the concept of “temp-to-hire”
as an alternative to companies paying fees.
Hundreds of
personnel services did not survive the upheavals in the economic
climate, but Burnett rode out the rough storms and emerged as a
well-known and respected industry leader.
In 1988, the
Burnett PC Learning Center was opened in Houston to provide our
corporate staff, placement candidates, temporary employees, and
our clients’ staff members access to specialized training
on a variety of software programs. In 2005, we changed the name to the Burnett Training Center, expanded the scope of our soft skills workshops and added DISCİ management training. In 2008, we closed our training center, shifting our focus to online training and the provision of contract trainers to our client companies.
In 1996, we established an office. In 1997, Burnett became a nationally certified woman owned business, which makes
us the perfect diversity vendor
partner.
Further expanding our Texas market, we opened an office in El Paso in 1996, in Dallas (Choice Staffing Services) in 1999, and in San Antonio in 2001.
To reflect the increasing diversity of our services, we changed our name to Burnett Staffing Specialists in 2000.
In 2003, Burnett
replaced its computer system to provide many new and upgraded features
to benefit both our clients and applicants.
